ELECTROLESS NICKEL PLATING PROCESSES

The process of electroless nickel plating consists in the depositing of nickel without the use of electricity: the presence of a chemical reducing agent in the treatment solution (normally sodium hypophosphite) triggers a controlled autocatalytic reaction with a co-deposition of phosphorus (resulting from the hypophosphite reaction).

ADDITIONAL PROPERTIES

Electroless nickel can be deposited on a wide range of materials: aluminum alloys, copper and its alloys (including copper-tungsten), ferrous alloys (stainless steel, kovar, invar, mumetal, etc.) and titanium (Ti6Al4V alloy) with thicknesses ranging from 2-3μ up to 50μ (and more) according to the needs. In comparison with electrolytic nickel-plating (using electricity), one of the strengths of electroless nickel-plating is that it allows uniform thickness distribution on treated objects, especially on complex geometric shapes; indeed, it is possible to nickel-plate the internal part of pipes without the aid of auxiliary anodes (it is sufficient to ensure good piece motion).
